According to Insider, the incident happened on April 26 on a school bus carrying students from Carter High School (Michigan, USA) home. At that time, the bus was driving when the male driver suddenly let go of the steering wheel and passed out.
Sitting at the front of the bus, Dillon Reeves - a student - quickly rushed to take control of the bus and stop it.
Robert Livernois, the high school superintendent, commented that Dillon's action showed that he was very calm and knowledgeable enough not to suddenly step on the brake but instead gradually press down to stop the bus safely.
Ireta Reeves, Dillon's stepmother, said that when asked how he knew exactly what to do to stop the bus, he said: "I saw Uncle Driver do that every day."
The video captured the situation when Dillon was stopping the bus and urging his classmates to call for help for the driver in distress, but the children on the bus began to panic and scream.
Observing his surroundings could have been facilitated by Dillon's avoidance of using a mobile phone, according to his father, Steve Reeves.
Upon the bus coming to a halt, the driver's condition was checked by a pedestrian and a passenger from another car, while the students were assisted in getting off the bus. Following this, the driver was transported to the emergency room.
All the students on the bus were unharmed, thanks to Dillon's timely action. They were then transferred to another bus and taken home.
The police also quickly arrived at the scene to handle the incident. According to the police, there were an estimated 66 students on the bus at the time, and Dillon's actions played a crucial role in preventing an accident from occurring.
To commend and thank the 13-year-old boy for his brave and quick thinking, some local residents decorated the front yard of Dillon's house with the words "hero" and an image of the school bus. The high school student will also receive a reward from the local police department.
