Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner's daughter, Violet Affleck, recently revealed the crucial reason she continues to wear a face mask in public, despite the reduction in mask mandates since the peak of COVID-19 in 2020.
The 18-year-old was seen with her parents, who divorced in 2018, still donning a face mask and shared her reasons for doing so with the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
In a video posted on X, Violet addressed the committee while wearing a face mask. She introduced herself.
She wrote on X: "Hi, Violet Affleck, Los Angeles resident, first-time voter, I’m 18."
Additionally, Violet also shared a personal health experience, stating, "I contracted a post-viral condition in 2019. I’m OK now, but I saw firsthand that medicine does not always have answers to the consequences of even minor viruses."
During her emotional plea in front of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Violet stressed the importance of confronting the long COVID crisis.
Eighteen-year-old Violet Affleck shared her experience recovering from viruses in an emotional plea to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, urging that "the county must oppose mask bans for any reason.
Through wearing a mask, Violet advocates for 'mask availability, air filtration, and far-UVC lights in government facilities, including jails and detention centers, as well as mask mandates in county medical facilities
She provided a significant statistic: "One in ten infections leads to long COVID."
“The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown that into sharper relief,” she added.
In the statement in front of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Violet described long COVID as "a devastating neurological and cardiovascular illness that can take away people’s ability to work, move, see, and even think."
She warned of its potential to exacerbate the homelessness crisis and the suffering of many people in Los Angeles, noting that it disproportionately affects "communities of color, disabled people, elderly people, trans people, women, and anyone in a public-facing essential job."
Violet's decision to wear a mask is a form of protest. She implored the board not to implement bans against face masks, stating, “We must expand the availability of free tests and treatment and, most importantly, the county must oppose mask bans for any reason"
She concluded her speech with a powerful message: “They do not keep us safer, they make vulnerable members of our community less safe and make everyone less able to participate in Los Angeles together. Thank you.”
Many online users praised Violet for her articulate and brave speech.
In the comment selection, many people called her a "strong, articulate, smart, brave young woman," while another encouraged her to "keep fighting & use that name & voice for good!"
