Many passengers choose a window seat to sleep, but a study suggests that this might not be a good idea. The Sleep Judge surveyed 1,000 passengers about their sleeping habits while traveling.
The study found that leaning to one side leads to the worst quality of sleep, while leaning forward is the best option, followed by sitting straight. While many people don't prefer the middle seat, the seat in the middle of the plane ranks second for the best sleep, followed by the middle seat in the front of the airplane.
Linda Ferguson, a crew member with 24 years of experience in the aviation industry, points out that windows are the dirtiest part of a plane due to passengers often coughing and sneezing on the surface. They also touch their hair and dirty hands to it, so it isn't advised to lean against it unless you clean it thoroughly.
Tommy Cimato, another crew member, shared in a TikTok video that you have no idea how many people, including children, have wiped their hands or other things all over the window. Consequently, relying on a window to sleep could turn into a disaster.
