Have you ever seen frozen guinea pigs? I'm sure it would be surprising.
On TikTok, the customer, who goes by @boomerd00mer2, posts a video on this platform, sharing their experience in a now-viral video.
On the video, the customer zoomed in on a freezer item labeled "Cuy," revealing that it contained a frozen Guinea pig priced at $29.59.
He exclaimed: “Oh, hold the f*ck on, family."
The Tiktoker was shocked. “Ain’t no goddamn way I read that correctly.". He cut off the video and decided to leave the store. He said, “Yeah, no, that’s it. I’m leaving. Goodbye,”
The video quickly went viral on social media, where it gained 10.5 million views and 19,000 comments. Below the video, several users express shock after seeing guinea pigs on sale in the frozen aisle, while others crack jokes in the comments.
One person said: It's a staple food in parts of South America. No different than eating a chicken.
A second wrote: Why did they have to make him look so cute on the box? I just can’t.
A third commented: Guinea pigs are the most beautiful animals. Idk how anyone could harm them.
Someone else wrote: All I know is that this is eaten in Peru; I don't know if anywhere else or in the USA they are pets.
They cost more frozen than in the pet store!! But all jokes aside, they taste pretty good! Another added.
In the follow-up video, the customer clarifies things about his first video. He said that he was at a "regular" supermarket, not a pet supply store, and explained that the store had one freezer with "unique" items like Cuy. He also said that he wasn’t “bashing anyone’s culture.”
Below the comment, several users explained that Guinea pigs are considered a delicacy in South America, particularly in Peru.
Guinea pigs are not only traditionally used to serve local cuisine but are also popular as a dish in Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador.
Another user claimed that Guinea pigs are served with potatoes and salsa and have been eaten for centuries, with Peru being one of the countries that consumes them the most.
