In a viral video on TikTok, a customer is stunned after showing the receipt, raising eyebrows over the tip percentages.
A TikTok user (@kentsports) has sparked a debate about restaurant tipping practices after noticing a discrepancy on a bill.
In the footage, the receipt offered pre-calculated suggested tip percentages, but a closer look revealed a potential issue.
Many restaurants now offer pre-calculated suggested tip percentages on receipts for customer convenience. This simplifies the process of leaving a 15%, 18%, or 20% tip, eliminating the need for mental math.
In the footage, the TikToker suggested double-checking these pre-calculated amounts for tips. In this instance, the suggested tip percentages did not accurately reflect the actual math.
The video showcased a receipt for a $20 bill. The suggested 15% tip was listed as $5.02, 18% as $6.02, and 20% as a surprising $6.69. Mathematically, 20% of $20 should be $4.00, not $6.69.
He admitted to personally over-tipping rather than under-tipping, but some viewers offered alternative explanations.
He added: "I'm always going to fall for this but whatever I'd rather over tip than under tip at restaurants."
Below the video, the viewer suggested that the discrepancy might stem from a discounted bill due to a coupon or special offer. In this scenario, the tip percentages could have been calculated before the discount was applied.
