In 2014, ADI (Animal Defenders International) rescued Muñeca and Leo, a lion couple who had spent most of their lives together in a circus in Peru, along with their cubs. While rescuing them, the organization had to separate the couple temporarily.
After rescuing Leo and his cubs Rolex, Coco, and Chino, the rescuers were unable to take Muñeca with them as the circus was able to conceal her.
It wasn't until six months later that they were finally able to locate and retrieve Muñeca, along with her daughters Kiara and Africa, during a successful raid on the circus.
Leo's affection for Muñeca, his longtime partner, became even more apparent when she fell ill in August. According to Creamer, Leo's behavior changed significantly as he began to watch over her even more closely than before. He was observed trying to coax her into eating and providing her with comfort during this difficult time.
Leo stood guard over her and even cuddled her to comfort her, which clearly demonstrated their strong emotional connection.
Studies have shown that lions cuddle to strengthen their social bonds, and Leo and Muñeca were often seen cuddling during their years together. In September, Muñeca passed away at the age of 19, but Leo remained by her side until the very end, providing comfort and love.
Despite the heartbreak of losing Muñeca, witnessing the depth of Leo's love was a beautiful moment that will be remembered for years to come as a perfect example of true love.
