Dog stranded on highway expresses gratitude with a big hug for rescuer

According to The Dodo, Evie, and Leslie Benson drove home from a day of back-to-school shopping, and the couple saw cars swerving around a small brown object ahead. Soon they saw a dog frozen with fear while an 18-wheeler truck approached.

Fortunately, the dog managed to evade the danger just in the nick of time, much to their relief. Immediately afterward, they jumped out of the car and rescued the poor dog.

They know they have to act fast to keep the dog safe. Soon enough, the dog was safe in the back seat of their car.

He was found in an unkempt appearance and emaciated state; however, the pup's tail continued wagging tirelessly.

Benson has deep sympathy for the poor dog, and she cannot imagine the hardships the dog has gone through and the fear and loneliness he has experienced. The journey went smoothly, and when the puppy finally fell asleep in her arms, she couldn't help shedding tears. She wanted him to understand that he had finally reached safe haven.

Benson is astonished that numerous drivers witnessed the poor dog but didn’t stop to help.

They brought the dog to the Goochland County Animal Shelter and the dog was swiftly admitted into their care.

The next day, Benson came back to check on him. I don't know if the puppy will miss her, but as soon as it arrives, it throws itself into her arms, which makes her very happy. She named the dog Wags, because of the cute name, he always wags his tail happily.

Benson said to The Dodo:  “My mom and I both started crying … I joined him on the floor and he curled up in my lap and was content … he even laid on top of me and cuddled me.”

Although she loves him, she’s off to college in the fall and unable to adopt him. However, she believes that Wags will find his forever family soon.

Benson will forever hold the memory of the little dog in the road, and undoubtedly, Wags will remember her too.“We made a lifelong connection and I love him so much,” Benson said. “I am glad I was able to save him and connect with him.”
