A family was left baffled after spotting a massive hole suddenly appeared on their front lawn, accompanied by rusty steps leading into the darkness.
Emma James, a 45-year-old homeowner, was left shocked while mowing the lawn after spotting a seven-foot-deep crater
The hole, initially small, expanded throughout the day, eventually reaching a depth of seven feet (2 meters).
Emma James, a school teaching assistant, immediately contacted the company responsible after spotting the rusty steps found within the gaping void.
She said: 'It is really odd as there are steps which lead down but we don't know what to and there was no lid or cover on it.
'We first thought it had a metal casing but there is concrete down there with metal steps.
'It just seems as though it has been forgotten about but there must be a planning record somewhere to explain what it is.
'We just want someone to come out and tell us what it is so we can sort it out. I don't want to just leave a hole in my front lawn.'
A spokesman for Buckinghamshire County Council later stepped in to clarify the issue.
However, despite the council's explanation, the James family remains skeptical and has called for an independent audit to determine the exact nature and safety of the site.
They were unwilling to cover up the vulnerability until its true purpose was verified.
Fearing a possible accident, the family took precautions by placing signs around the hole to prevent anyone from stumbling and falling into the abyss.
