An entire online parent group has been left confused by a first-grader homework question.
The incident started in a Facebook forum when a mother posted her 6-year-old daughter's difficult homework assignment, sparking thousands of theories.
The post's content included:
“So… My six-year-old daughter, who’s in year one, got this homework question. It’s confusing, in my opinion, to say the least, especially considering the age it’s aimed at. but I’d love to hear your answers!”
She added, “I think it’s something you’d find in a Puzzler magazine personally, but let me know your thoughts.
The homework question was, “Which word is the odd one out?”
The homework required students to choose one word different from others, including five words: friend, egg, toothbrush, desk, and silver.
This question sparked a multitude of diverse responses, with over 4,000 individuals sharing their unique perspectives on the matter.
Many parents identified "friend" as the odd one out among the given options, pointing out that it differs from the others as it is not an object.
Additionally, the word "silver" was frequently mentioned as another possible outlier as it is an adjective.
While some claimed it was an adjective while the others were nouns, others claimed it was both.
"I would guess silver because it's an adjective while the other words are nouns. However, silver is a terrible color choice because, if it were a tangible object, it might be a noun. Stupid query! Someone wrote.
"Although I'm not sure what the context of the homework is, silver isn't a noun. Another person stated, "Children would find it extremely confusing if it's confusing for adults."
Among the diverse range of opinions, some parents also put forward "egg" and "toothbrush" as potential candidates for the odd ones out.
They thought that egg was the only edible word, while toothbrush was a compound word.
The only food you can eat is eggs. It's not that small people wouldn't try to eat or consume the other items, but they aren't food, someone asserted.
The fact that "toothbrush" is the only word without an "e," a compound term, someone emphasized.
The final answer, as revealed by the teacher, is "silver" because it is the only one among the given options that is not a noun.
The rest of the options, including "egg," "toothbrush," and "friend," are all nouns.
