Joanna Anderson's Airbnb experience, shared on TikTok, has left viewers perplexed and sparked a flurry of wild theories.
The video documented her stay at an Airbnb property where the owner had left numerous notes around the house, leading to an unexpected and hefty bill.
If you're new to Airbnb, be aware that there have been instances of additional fees and charges for seemingly absurd reasons.
There have also been cases of overbearing owners with stringent rules. However, Joanna's experience takes the cake.
In the footage, Joanna showed her rented accommodation and the additional fees she incurred for using basic amenities.
Joanna revealed a series of handwritten notes from the owner, detailing charges for amenities such as WiFi, the pool table, TV, and laundry machine.
The note read: "WiFi is free on the first day of your stay but will be charged at £10.00 ($12.67) per day per device thereafter."
Another note on the washing machine informed Joanna that each wash would cost £5.00 ($6.34), with no exceptions.
Additionally, Joanna also revealed another note on the armchair.
The note requested that guests not sit on it. However, the reason behind this strange request was that it was claimed to be the favorite chair of the owner's deceased husband.
But it didn't end there. Another note declared the house 'vegan' and insisted that no meat or meat products be used in the microwave.
Additionally, Joanna was charged exorbitantly after using the pool table twice and washing two loads of laundry after the owner spotted that everything had been put back in a different place.
In the footage, Joanna called the owner to clarify the breakdown of the charges, which led to an even more surprising revelation.
After the incident, Joanna and the owner agreed to address the matter with Airbnb, and Joanna could dispute the charges.
The video gained attention on social media and sparked debate.
In the comment selection, many suggested that Joanna contact the police and a lawyer, arguing that the owner's knowledge of Joanna's activities suggested surveillance.
One person said: No reason to get an Airbnb anymore. I’ll stay at my nice hotels, get treated with respect and no ridiculous rules.
A second wrote: Airbnb was a great idea, but they need better oversight for issues like this and block those users from hosting, but they don’t.
While a third commented: One of many reasons that I will not use Airbnb or VRBO.
Someone else said: Airbnb are getting ridiculous. It was fun 10 years ago, now I'd rather stay at the hotel, instead of pay all kinds of fees and even do chores.
Another added: I'm so done with Airbnb and VRBO this is a perfect example. These people are in the hospitality business and they're inhospitable. Hotels will treat you correct for the same money.
According to Airbnb's website, hosts are not allowed to collect additional fees outside of the platform unless they have explicit authorization from the company.
Joanna's experience serves as a reminder for guests to thoroughly understand the terms and conditions of their stay before booking.
