Cooper, an American foxhound from Virginia, has short spine syndrome caused by inbreeding. His vertebrae are fused and compressed, resulting in a body only half the length of a normal dog.
However, his owners, Elly and Andy Keegan, describe him as the happiest dog they know, and he has a normal and happy life.
Cooper was rescued at two months old near a suspected puppy mill in Halifax, Virginia, by animal control officers.
A shelter in Minnetonka, Minnesota, took Cooper in, where he received treatment for ear mites, worms, and a hernia.
His lovable nature caught the attention of the Keegans, and they decided to adopt him. Cooper has undergone surgery to assist with his bowel functions and recently suffered a severe fracture to his neck and a bone infection called osteomyelitis.
Despite his deformity, he can keep up with his doggy siblings, and he may even be considered as a candidate for a Purdue University study of short-spined dogs.
Cooper has a significant following on Facebook and is a social media star. All dogs deserve love and care, no matter their appearance or needs.
The Keegans provide Cooper with a perfect home where he is loved just the way he is.
