A Mexican man managed to purchase a pair of expensive Cartier earrings at a 99 percent discount due to a website error.
Well, this is a stroke of luck.
Rogelio Villarreal, a resident of Mexico, found an unbelievable deal on Cartier's website. He ordered two pairs of gold-diamond earrings, each priced at $14,000, but due to a glitch, he only paid $28 in total.
Villarreal wrote on social media platform X, "I took advantage of the opportunity and even ordered two pairs. Call me starving, but I doubt that you would have missed the opportunity."
Cartier had reportedly miscalculated the conversion from pesos to dollars, listing the expensive earrings as 237 pesos instead of the correct 237,000 pesos.
Villarreal spotted the incident on social media, revealing his luck.
While many users on platform X were shocked at the glitch, some accused Villarreal of theft.
Others warned Villarreal that Cartier's lawyers might come after him.
One person said: With the profit Cartier must make, I’m sure they won’t miss it too much. I hope he enjoys the earrings.
A second wrote: Rich people misuse systems in place all the time. But it’s an issue when someone else does it? The mistake was not on his part.
While a third commented: We are not responsible for glitches in a company's system.
Another added: I found a glitch on gaming headsets from Amazon. I bought a bunch and then sold them for a good profit. Not his fault site was broken.
Someone else said: Guy putt all his points into luck and charisma.
Well how did he do it so I can do it too. If I was him I’d sell it afterwards. Someone said.
Villarreal continued to boast about his cheap find over the following days, sharing photos of supposed communication between himself and Cartier.
He even involved Mexico's consumer protection agency and claimed to have fought for months to get the earrings, alleging that Cartier tried to offer him a bottle of champagne instead.
Despite the controversy, it seems Villarreal gets to keep the earrings at a bargain price. “War is over. Cartier is delivering [the earrings],” he announced on X. He also shared a snapshot of the earrings once they had arrived.
