A 73-year-old man from Louisiana has accumulated thousands of pennies throughout the years. He explained that he made a habit of never spending them when out and about.
Initially, he used a single jug as a repository for these pennies, but as the collection grew, one vessel was no longer sufficient.
In fact, over a span of nearly 50 years, Otha ended up filling not just a second, but also a third, a fourth, and finally, a fifth jug with pennies.
In an interview with News Star, Otha shared: “I became convinced that spotting a lost or dropped penny was an additional God-given incentive reminding me to always be thankful.
“There have been days where I failed to pray and more often than not, a lost or dropped penny would show up to remind me.”
Additionally, he also explained how he amassed so many pennies, Anders told the newspaper: 'I would never spend a penny.'
'I would break a dollar before giving up a penny.'
Notably, students at the school where he taught also contributed to his collection by gifting him pennies.
he maintained a policy of not accepting donations; he still preferred to swap out other coins for the pennies.
He told the News-Star: 'If I was at someone's house and I found a penny, I would pick it up and I would keep it.
'I will always tell the person that if it was a quarter, I would give it back, but since it is a penny, I’m keeping it.'
Eventually, Osha decided to cash in his stash when he discovered that insurance wouldn't cover it.
So he loaded the 15 bottles of pennies into a truck and took them to the bank. Ultimately, Otha collected approximately 513,614 coins.
The total came to a whopping $5,136.14. Otha Anders of Ruston deposited the money into Ruston Origin Bank, the News Star reported.
Then, the man reportedly deposited more than $5,000 in coins he had saved over nearly 50 years in a bank to pay his dental bills.
