Man underwent strange surgery attaching his hand to ankle after an industrial accident

In a remarkable medical intervention, doctors in China have successfully saved a man's hand by temporarily grafting it onto his ankle.

The procedure followed a severe industrial accident where the man's hand was severely damaged and required immediate attention to prevent permanent loss.

The incident occurred in Changde, Hunan province, where the man, identified as Mr. Zhou, was working with heavy machinery.

Unfortunately, his hand became caught in the machinery, causing extensive damage to his fingers and palm.

Colleagues quickly responded, halting the machinery and rushing him to the nearest hospital for urgent medical care.

After being rushed to the hospital, doctors assessed the severity of Mr. Zhou's injuries.

They determined that his hand had suffered extensive trauma and required delicate surgery to save it.

Given the complex nature of the damage and the need to ensure blood circulation and tissue viability, the medical team devised an innovative approach.

Dr. Tang Juyu, the lead surgeon overseeing Mr. Zhou's case, explained the decision to attach the hand to the ankle temporarily.

This unusual step was taken to keep the hand alive and preserve its functionality while preparations were made for the main reconstructive surgery.

By grafting the hand onto the ankle, doctors could ensure a continued blood supply to the damaged tissues, a critical factor to the limb reattachment.

During the procedure, which lasted several weeks, Mr. Zhou's hand remained securely attached to his ankle.

The medical team carefully monitored his condition, ensuring that the graft remained stable and that no complications could jeopardize the ultimate goal of reattaching the hand to its original position.

Throughout this period, Mr. Zhou displayed remarkable patience and resilience.

Despite the discomfort and the unusual nature of the treatment, he remained optimistic about the outcome.

He thanked the medical team for their expertise and dedication, acknowledging that their innovative approach gave him hope during a challenging time.

After several weeks of intensive care and preparation, doctors successfully performed the main surgery to reattach Mr. Zhou's hand to its rightful place.

Following the successful surgery, Mr. Zhou underwent a period of rehabilitation to regain strength and mobility in his hand.

Physical therapy sessions were essential in helping him adapt to the changes caused by the injury and subsequent treatment.

In another remarkable medical case, an Indian woman has become the first woman in the world to receive a hand transplant from a man.

Eight years ago, Shreya Siddanagowder, then 18 years old, tragically lost both her arms below the elbow in a horrific bus accident.

After trying prosthetic hands without success, Shreya made the bold decision to undergo a bilateral hand transplant in 2017.

The 13-hour surgery involved a team of 16 anesthesiologists and 20 surgeons. The hands she received came from a 21-year-old man who had been involved in a fatal bike collision.

Interestingly, the donor's darker skin tone, Shreya's transplanted hands have gradually become lighter and more feminine in appearance over time.

Doctors speculate that Shreya's body may produce less melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, compared to her donor's. Additionally, her hands have also become slimmer with time.
