In an interview with the New York Times, Marlon Wayans,  the 51-year-old actor, reveals the reason why he never married, and relates to his mother, leaving viewers stunned. 

In the interview in New York, Marlon Wayans opens up about his relationship with his mother and his views on marriage, which gained attention from viewers. 

Speaking to the New York Times, Marlon Wayans opened up about his relationship with his mother. 

Comedian Marlon Wayans has recently spoken out about the profound influence his mother had on his life and his romantic relationships. 

In an interview, he revealed that he never married because he didn't want his mother to feel second to any woman.

He said: "I never got married, because I never wanted my mother to be jealous of a woman. I never wanted my mother to feel second to any woman." 

Marlon Wayans revealed that he wanted his mother to always be his number one priority. 

During the interview, he recounted a final conversation with his mother, which left him in tears. 

He continued: "I told my mother on her deathbed, 'I never got married because I always wanted you to be my No. 1 girl.'

“Those were my last words. I said, 'take that to heaven with you.'”

He revealed that his mother needed him, leading him to never want to get married.

Speaking to Essence in 2021, he said: "I never got married because I knew my mom needed me,

Additionally, Wayans admitted that his mother was 'very needy'.

Despite his concerns about his mother's potential jealousy, Wayans has had relationships over the years. Most notably, he was in a long-term relationship with Angela Zachary from 1992 to 2013, and they share two children, Shawn and Kai.

Wayans' views on marriage after his mother's passing

Since his mother's passing, Wayans has admitted that he is now more open to the idea of getting married.

He shared in a 2021 interview with Essence that he prefers relationships that can bend and not break, likening them to friendships where both parties learn, grow, and get better together.

Wayans also discussed one of the last conversations he had with his mother before her death in 2020.

He told her on her deathbed that he never married because he always wanted her to be his No. 1 girl.

On his career front, Wayans hinted at his willingness to channel his grief into his work to bring out the best of himself for his fans.

His upcoming comedy special, Good Grief, set to premiere on Amazon Prime on June 6, is expected to delve into the passing of his mother and his father, who died in 2023.
