A second wrote:  Originally, the site belonged to Echo Bay Technology Group, Omidyar's consulting firm. Omidyar had tried to register the domain name Echobay Partners, LLC, but found it already taken by the Echo Bay Mines, a gold mining company, so he shortened it to his second choice, Electronics, Cars, Fashion, Collectibles, Coupons and More | eBay.

A second wrote: Pierre Omidyar originally named the site auctionweb. At first it was just an offshoot not even owning its own domain. He owned a company called echo Bay technology group, and when he wanted to get his own domain for auction web he wanted to call it echo Bay but that was already taken so he settled on eBay.

While a third commented:   The company officially changed the name of its service from AuctionWeb to eBay in September 1997, after Echo Bay Technology Group, Omidyar's consulting firm. The domain name echobay, com was already taken by a gold mining company, so Omidyar shortened it to eBay.com.

Someone else said:  For the first year or so it was called AuctionWeb.com Pierre Odmyiar (sorry for the spelling ), the founder of eBay, had an established business already that was something like echo bay solutions and wanted ActionWeb to be under that business. It turned out the domain he wanted, echobay.com, was already taken by another company so he shortened it to eBay

Founded by Pierre Omidyar in California on September 3, 1995, the company wasn't initially named eBay. It adopted the name eBay in 1997, an abbreviation for Echo Bay Technology Group. Contrary to the widespread belief that the "e" signifies electronic, it actually stands for Echo in the company's name.

The birth of AuctionWebIn September 1995, Pierre Omidaya, the founder of eBay, launched a website initially known as AuctionWeb.

Pierre Omidaya wanted to create an "honest and open marketplace" that would connect buyers and sellers worldwide. Over Labor Day weekend, he wrote the code for AuctionWeb on his personal computer, marking the beginning of a new era in e-commerce.

Then, Pierre, being the first user of his own site, listed a broken laser pointer for sale shortly after its launch.

A Canadian named Mark Fraser was reported to have purchased it.

During this period, rumors circulated on social media suggesting that Pierre created the website to help his wife collect Pez candy dispensers. However, this story was debunked, revealing it as a fabrication.

The rise of AutionWeb has significant value. Within a year, the total value of merchandise sold on AuctionWeb reached a staggering $7.2 million.

Ten months later, the 'Beanie Babies craze' took the world by storm.

However, since the echobay.com domain name was already taken by a gold mining company, Echo Bay Mines, Pierre decided to shorten it to eBay.com.
