Since then, numerous individuals have shared similar experiences, sparking conversations about this peculiar occurrence across social media platforms.
Medical experts, including Dr. Rabia De Latour, gastroenterologist at NYU Langone Health, and Dr. Felice Schnoll-Sussman, gastroenterologist and professor of clinical medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, shed light on the science behind "ghost poops."
They explain that these incidents are quite normal and often occur due to well-formed, dense stools that leave minimal residue.
They explained: 'The texture of stool and how much you need to wipe can depend on a few factors: fiber intake, gut health, the amount of water and other nutrients absorbed from stool in the large intestine, and how well the anal sphincter muscles function'.
Both women insisted that factors such as fiber intake, gut health, and muscle function can influence stool texture and wipe requirements.
Sometimes, the absence of residue in the toilet bowl may result from the dense nature of the feces, which quickly descends into the water.
While "ghost poops" are generally harmless, consistent feelings of needing to poop without results may indicate underlying health issues.
Inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease, colorectal polyps, or anal cancer could be potential causes, warranting medical attention.
