The incident occurred during the screening of the movie "Love Lies Bleeding" at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) in Belgium.
Many people came to watch the A24 thriller at the big 1,400-seat theater.
Most of the audience was made up of women and queer viewers. But there were a few hateful people who ruined the event.
They said terrible things that were both homophobic and misogynistic. This made the atmosphere very unfriendly and unpleasant.
According to reports, same-sex romance scenes in the film triggered homophobic heckling and jeering from some attendees.
Shockingly, a specific scene depicting sexual coercion was met with cheers from a small portion of the crowd.
Some of the people in the audience were upset by the rude behavior. They spoke up and said that they could tell the difference between jokes that are not harmful and insults that target lesbians.
As things got worse, many people in the audience chose to leave the theater. Some of them got into arguments and fights. Around 60 to 80 individuals walked out in protest.
They wanted the movie to stop playing early, and they also asked for their money back, but their request for a refund was rejected.
Elina Fischer, who was at the premiere, explained what happened. She said that the situation quickly became chaotic and difficult to manage.
She and others were afraid for their safety because the people who made offensive comments might become physically violent.
That's why they felt they had to leave the theater to keep themselves safe.
The Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) confirmed that the police were called to handle the protests.
Jonathon Lenaerts, a BIFFF representative, said that the festival is dedicated to creating a friendly and respectful atmosphere for everyone.
He strongly criticized the hurtful and disrespectful jokes and stated that they would take immediate action to remove those who made inappropriate comments.
