Shaggy, the Jamaican artist, has recently disclosed the genuine meaning behind his popular song, "It Wasn't Me," leaving fans surprised.
Although many of us may have memorized the lyrics and sung along to the song countless times, we didn't truly understand what it was about.
It turns out that it's not as easy as we thought.
While Shaggy has released other timeless classics like "Boombastic" and "Angel," there's no denying that one of his most iconic and recognized songs is the 2000 hit, "It Wasn't Me."
Some of the lyrics go: "Honey came in and she caught me red-handed/ Creeping with the girl next door/ Picture this, we were both butt-naked/ Banging on the bathroom floor."
Due to the lyrics, a lot of people thought Shaggy was cheating in the song and making excuses, but that's not true.
Shaggy, who is currently married to Rebecca Packer, with whom he tied the knot in 2014 and shares three daughters, addressed the misconceptions surrounding the song in an interview with People.
He clarified that "It Wasn't Me" is not a cheating song but rather an anti-cheating song.
Shaggy mentioned that the reason for the misunderstanding was that people didn't listen to the entire song.
Shaggy clarified that towards the end of the song, there is a section where two people are having a conversation.
In this part, Shaggy's character is giving misguided advice, saying something like, "Hey, man, if you got caught, just deny it and say, 'It wasn't me'."
And then at the end, the guy says, 'I'm going to tell her that I'm sorry for the pain that I've caused. I've been listening to your reasoning, it makes no sense at all. Going to tell her that I'm sorry for the pain that I've caused. You might think that you're a player, but you're completely lost.'"
According to Shaggy, nobody really pays attention to that part, which is the essence of the song.
