In a viral video on social media, a single mom has sparked debate after sharing a video revealing she faced being homeless after her rent doubled just before Christmas day.
On Tiktok, a single mom, known as Jakki Brooking, 28, who goes by @jakkibrooking, shared a video where she said that the Perth home she's been living in for six years would rise on January 1st from $300 to $630.
Explaining the video, a sobbed mom said she registered to pay lower rent under the National Rental Affordability Scheme, a federal government program introduced in 2008 that offers financial incentives to encourage property owners to rent to low-income workers at rates below market rates.
A single mom breaks down in tears in the video and explains that her lease is up on the 1st. However, she has applied to all of them and has been rejected.
She explained in the video:
'I just don't know what I'm meant to do now. This is literally so embarrassing.
'(I'm) facing homelessness from the end of the lease.'
The NRAS is designed to lower rental costs for individuals with lower incomes, allowing Jakki to pay around 20 percent less than the average market rental price.
However, the property changed ownership, prompting the new proprietors to withdraw it from the government scheme and list it on the open rental market to attract higher hire prices.
While numerous users are expressing prayers for her due to the challenging financial situation, others are saying that the high cost of living makes it difficult for people with low incomes to pay rent.
One person said: yeesh all the landlord apologists in these comments. housing is a human right, i’m sorry you’re going through this lovely.
A second wrote: I love how so many people jump into these threads to justify landlords increasing rent because of mortgage rates. ...
While a third commented: Remember, property owners are dealing with ongoing interest rate hikes, repairs, maintenance, damages, land tax, insurance, land & water rates etc
