One of the countries in the world known for its unique punishment methods is Italy. In this place, individuals who are deemed irritating or troublesome are subjected to a punishment where they are put into cages and lowered into the river.
However, the action of punishing individuals in the river is merely a lighthearted activity rather than a serious attempt to harm them.
According to LAB, In the Italian town of Trento, townspeople caged their politicians and drowned them in a river as punishment.
The cage was lowered within a second, and it was seen as a fun way for politicians to realize their mistakes. It's called 'Tonca'. It happens to be part of the town's annual Vigilian celebrations held in late June.
The events are meant to honor Saint Vigilio, the city's patron saint, the festivities encompass various ceremonies, including the Court of Penitence. During this significant occasion, notable personalities from Trento who have brought shame upon themselves throughout the year undergo put on trial.
While some may be found innocent and spared from being immersed in the river, those found guilty face the sentence of being subjected to the Tonca as their punishment.
This means that a politician will be among those who immerse themselves in water. Because according to the opinion of the people in the city, the one who messes up the most can only be a politician.
Punishment is a way to publicly ridicule leaders who fail to deliver on their promises.
Tonca traditionally takes place on the last Sunday before June 26, the day the celebration ends.
