The viral sensation caught the attention of people after Richmond Animal Care and Control put him up for adoption.
Kay Ford, the new owner and a cat-lover has already put Patches on a diet resulting in a two-pound weight loss for the 40-pound cat.
Despite his size, Patches is actually quite picky with his food, according to Christy Peters, director of Richmond Animal Care and Control, who added that the cat was surrendered by his previous owner who could no longer take care of him.
According to veterinarians, the typical weight for domestic cats ranges from around 8-12 lbs, depending on their breed.
A 4-year-old child, on the other hand, typically weighs around 37 lbs. Despite being too big for a cage, Patches was found to be in good health after undergoing diagnostic tests, and he was kept in one of the rescue team's offices.
Ms. Peters suggested that Patches might have been consuming human food instead of cat food, but emphasized that he is not a voracious eater, as "he is really quite selective."
Together, Patches and his new owner are on a weight loss program, and as a result, the once-internet-famous feline has lost a pound, bringing his weight down to 38 lbs.
Ms Ford competed to adopt Patches by stating that she was retired and had plenty of time and resources to help the cat achieve his weight loss goal, hoping to inspire herself to lose weight along with him.
Ms Peters confirmed that Patches has already shown signs of weight loss. The Guinness World Record for "fattest cat" was awarded to Himmy, a 10-year-old cat, in 1986.
